Roughout Ranch Foundation (Roughout Ranch) addresses a persistent problem facing Shasta County which is the shortage of opportunities for vulnerable and underserved populations (children and special needs community). Through life skills and Equine-Assisted Activities and Learning, such as caring for horses in a safe and enriching space, participants learn valuable skills that set them up for future success. The ranch was developed in 1973 and will contribute to the county's needs and be a center for community events, life skills programs, mentoring and equestrian services.

I would like to shine light on how amazing the Roughout Ranch Foundation is and the dedication that Kathy has not only to the Ranch but to the population that she serves through the Ranch.
I contacted Roughout Ranch in Oct 2020 to enrich the lives of my 4 special needs children. My four boys started Nov 2020 and has continued one-on-one in the Horse Encounters™ program with the horses, donkey, pony, and other farm animals at the Ranch
This experience that Roughout Ranch provides for my children is priceless one of a kind and cannot be duplicated. Kathy has a unique approach and has gotten to know each one of my boys and with the Horse Encounters™ for Relationship Enrichment program my boys have gained self-confidence in their own abilities and much more.
Kathy and along with other Ranch staff has facilitated other group activities for my boys to sharpen their teamwork skills.
Oct 2021 was the first year my boys participated in the Rough Rider Roundup, special western day and rodeo that was put on by Roughout Ranch. This event gave my boys the opportunity to have a simulated cowboy on the ranch experience with roping, bull riding, cow milking, gold panning and much more.
I am truly thankful for Roughout Ranch and I look forward to what this next year unfolds for the Ranch and I'm anticipating more growth in my boys many years to come.
We move 1yr. from Bay Area. My son lost out his Horseback riding there. We live in Redding now. Thanks to our respite person recommending Roughout Ranch. My disable son-Jacob wakes us up to make sure we are not late. He loves to be around the animals. He says their his friends. Mr. Big the turkey made sure on our first day he was the boss. Now he see Jacob Mr. Big runs behind him to keep up. Waldo the donkey played peek a boo with Jacob sticking his head from behind a wall. Now when Jacob is drawing Waldo puts his head on Jacob’s shoulder. Jacob just laughs he thinks it’s cute. He loves it. This is the best place we were recommended to us. Kathy and Racheal are the best too. We too recommended this place to everyone. They are so kind and your Children will learn a lot. Parents will be happy too. We are.
Roughout Ranch has been an absolute blessing. My 6 year old daughter came to me when she was only 8 months old. In that short time, she already had such traumatic experiences she developed PTSD. She has also been diagnosed with AdHD, Autism, depression and anxiety. When she was 3, we found Roughout Ranch. She has loved horse since she was a baby. I was hoping to find a program that would fit her needs. There are others in our area, I visited with their clients (who seemed happy with them). But I just didn't feel they were right for my little one. However, Roughout Ranch has been perfect. Her visits are just her (even before the pandemic). My grandson also goes and they often will have their visits scheduled together. Kathy still tailors the visits according to their individual needs. My daughter has become so much more patient and aware of other's feelings. They are also working on conquering some of her fears. You can definitely tell when she has not been to the ranch in awhile. I only wish she could visit everyday!
I cannot even begin to express how amazing Roughout Ranch has been for my little one! She has significant anxiety and other challenges. Kathy and Jim have been so patient and loving. Becci has always loved horses. But they have helped her to have an appreciation and respect for them. This has been great for self awareness, confidence, trust and bonding. She gets to help feed all of the animals, as well as groom, ride and do activities the horses and pony. The Roughrider Roundup they do at the Ranch each year is amazing for the whole family.
Beautiful location and sweet animals, this is an awesome place to connect with yourself through the equines here. I come out here to visit and relax with my daughter. She loves Puck the pony. Worth it to come experience horses if you don't have your own at home.
I highly recommend Roughout Ranch. We adopted my son when he was 11 years old but he came from a very toxic household and experienced a lot of trauma. He has PTSD as well as many social challenges. He typically kept to himself a lot and didn't pick up on social ques very well. He also had a hard time trusting people but really gravitated to animals. He has been going to the Ranch for a couple years now. This wasn't his first time around horses but this was very different than what he had experienced before. It was one-on-one time with the horses and specialized time and attention that he so badly needed. The changes have been remarkable. He opens up more now, he picks up on subtle social ques from watching how the horses communicate with him and he shows so much compassion. He always comes back looking so happy. I would and do recommend this to everyone but especially those with PTSD or social challenges. It has been amazing for Jason and I cannot thank them enough for all their patience and hard work!
