VOLUNTEERING AND LIFE RESTORATION ON A WORKING RANCH

Volunteering at Roughout Ranch

Interested in working with horses, becoming a ranch volunteer or both?  Come by the ranch, meet the herd, and learn more about Roughout Ranch! 


We are a volunteer, charitable organization run ranch. You will also gain rewarding skills and enjoyment from assisting the clients and students. Most of all, you will touch many lives by lending a helping hand.


Volunteer duties may include:

  • Lead walker or side walker
  • Grooming and tacking 
  • Barn and Critter Chores – Morning chores of a working horse ranch include feeding horses and other critters, leading horses to pastures, scrubbing water buckets wheelbarrow poop pickup, etc.  
  • Help during equine activities and riding sessions
  • Photographers  – Novice or professional to photograph the horses, activities and the ranch for our website and marketing material or your class or other projects
  • Fundraisers – to help raise funds for the ranch, organize, direct and/or participate in fundraisers 
  • Outreach – to help handout flyers, business cards, and to bring awareness to the organization and our programs
  • General Handyman – to help with general ranch maintenance on a regular basis (no experience needed). 
  • Activities Coordinators – to help organize, direct and participant in activities
  • Landscaping – Weed eating, mowing, trimming, cleaning up flower beds, watering, etc.
  • Gardening – Working and taking care of the vegetable garden plus you will get to pick your own vegetables to take home.
  • Experienced Horse People/Wranglers – to help with during equine-assisted activities 


How to Become a Volunteer at Roughout Ranch

Youth volunteers must have parent approval and complete volunteer training.  All side walkers, lead walkers, and horse handlers must attend training.  


Background check consent for adult volunteers since we work with many children.  Physical requirements must match the task/activity. A volunteer form must be filled out entirely. 

How Can You Help?

Roughout Ranch in Redding, California has many volunteer opportunities available (horse experience is not necessary).


Below are just a few of the positions we are currently looking to fill. If you are interested in any of these positions or would like to help us in other ways, please contact us at 209-256-9640. 


  • Critter Chores: We need people to help with the morning critter chores. Chores include feeding, scrubbing water buckets and wheelbarrow work (poop pickup). In exchange for your hard work, we offer you a therapeutic-like environment full of funny friendly animal entertainment.
  • Landscaping: help weed whacking, pulling weeds, mowing, trimming trees, raking and more!
  • Side walkers: walk alongside the horse while kids ride for added safety
  • Wranglers: Experienced horse people to prepare the horses before sessions (grooming, groundwork, tacking)
  • Fundraising Coordinator: Provide ideas and/or to help raise money for operating costs in addition to organizing, directing and participating in fundraisers.
  • Program Director: Provide ideas and/or to help create equine and non-equine activities for kids, special needs community and foster kids, etc. in addition to implementing programs.
  • Outreach Coordinator: Provide ideas and/or to help promote projects and services to bring awareness to the ranch.
  • Social Media Coordinator: Provide content, ideas and/or to help represent, implement and maintain our online presence through various platforms.
  • Event Coordinator: help with planning and managing the annual event Rough Rider Roundup.

  • Outreach Coordinator: In your spare time from home
  • Event Coordinator: Meet quarterly
